Residency Purpose Statements

The purpose of our ASHP-approved pharmacy practice residency program is to provide experience and knowledge which foster the development of skills to fulfill the challenges of evolving roles in pharmacy practice. Residents completing the pharmacy practice residency program at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics shall be able to:

  • Manage and improve the medication-use process
  • Provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams
  • Exercise leadership and practice management skills
  • Demonstrate project management skills
  • Provide medication and practice-related education/training
  • Utilize medical informatics
  • Participate in the management of medical emergencies
  • Demonstrate additional competencies that contribute to working successfully in the health care environment

Upon completion of this residency program, the residency graduate shall be prepared to successfully fulfill the requirements of a clinical staff pharmacist working with pediatric patients in a clinical setting.

Requirements for Residency Certificate

The pharmacy resident must complete the following activities in order to successfully complete the pharmacy residency at Children's Hospitals & Clinics of MN:

  • All evaluated goals must be achieved by the end of the year

  • Medication Usage Evaluation with results presented at P&T Committee or division-level meeting

  • At least 2 new drug reviews/class reviews for the P&T Committee

  • At least 2 system/department policy revisions

  • Completed paper describing their research project written according to guidelines for publication set forth by AJHP

Note that some residents may be exempt from some of the above requirements based on previous experience. Any exemptions to the completion of required activities must be noted in the resident’s quarterly progress report by the resident’s primary residency preceptor and the residency program director.

Residency Learning Experiences

Individualized Residency Plan
Planning the learning experiences for the pharmacy practice resident will be accomplished in the initial weeks of the residency year using the Career Assessment Form and Initial Needs Assessment form. After the resident has completed these documents, the resident's primary preceptor will develop an individualized residency plan for each resident. Both the resident and the primary preceptor will agree to specific learning experiences.

Required Learning Experiences
The pharmacy practice residency program contains several required learning experiences: acute care, ambulatory care, practice management, and drug information. Practice management and drug information will be a modified longitudinal learning experience. The required learning experiences include:

  • Orientation
  • Practice management
  • Acute Care
  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Pediatric Intensive Care
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Ambulatory Medicine
  • Elective Learning Experiences

The resident will have approximately 20 weeks for choosing elective learning experiences from either campus to meet their interests. In the past, residents have chosen to pursue elective learning experiences in areas including: hematology/oncology, neurology, emergency medicine, pain management/palliative care, patient safety, cystic fibrosis, infectious disease, endocrinology and toxicology.

Evaluations

Evaluation of the resident's performance will consist of at least the following:

Summative evaluations
Summative evaluations are broad-based evaluations completed by the preceptor at the conclusion of the resident's learning experience. Summative evaluations are designed to evaluate the resident's performance on the goals and objectives assigned to their learning experiences.

Criteria-based checklists
Criteria-based checklists evaluate individual performance of an objective. They are related to specific events and tasks. Criteria-based checklists help the preceptor to objectify their summative evaluation form judgments. Criteria checklists may be completed as often as deemed necessary by the preceptor.

Self-Evaluations
The resident shall on an ongoing basis conduct self-evaluation of his/her work. The preceptor will prepare and discuss with the resident a program of self-evaluation for that learning experience.

Preceptor and Learning Experience Evaluation
Upon completion of the learning experience, the resident shall complete the Preceptor and Learning Experience evaluation form to provide feedback for the preceptor.

Quarterly evaluations
Residents' progress towards accomplishing their residency goals will be assessed quarterly using the Quarterly Summary of Residency Goals form. This will help focus efforts towards those goals that the resident has not made significant progress in achieving.

Department Meetings

Topics in Health Care

Topics in Health Care is a monthly meeting held jointly with the pharmacy residents and preceptors from the Allina Health System. The purpose for this meeting is to discuss current topics affecting the practice of pharmacy. Each month, a resident is assigned to choose a topic for discussion, and then moderate the discussion at the meeting.

Pharmacy Leadership Meeting
The Pharmacy Leadership meeting is an informational meeting intended to keep management and clinical staffs current with department projects and up to date with recent developments in our department.

Pharmaceutical Care Rounds
Pharmaceutical Care Rounds is a meeting designed to keep pharmacists up to date with clinical issues and events affecting the care of patients.

Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee
Residents will attend monthly Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee meetings. Each resident will formally evaluate new drugs for inclusion or exclusion to the hospital formulary and present new policies or revisions to existing policies to the committee.

Journal Club
Children's pharmacists, pharmacy students and the pediatric residents participate in a weekly journal club that is scheduled on both campuses for Friday mornings.

Resident/Preceptor Meetings
Residents and preceptors will meet at least monthly to discuss current issues involving the residents and the residency program.

Professional Meetings

The pediatric pharmacy practice resident is expected to attend professional meetings throughout the residency year. The department will pay for travel, lodging and meeting registration for one national meeting.

Residents will attend and present their residency project at the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group Annual Meeting held in April/May of each year. In addition, residents are encouraged to present results of their residency project at the Midwest Pharmacy Residents Conference in May.

Residents are strongly encouraged to attend local professional conferences.

Presentations / Teaching Experiences

The resident will be scheduled to provide presentations to the pharmacy staff for CE credit at the conclusion of each of their clinical rotations. The topic of these presentations will be related to their current learning experience. In addition to these conferences, the resident will review journal articles for Children's Journal Club. The resident also has the option of providing didactic coursework for pharmacy students at the College of Pharmacy. Residents may also assist with the preceptorship of pharmacy students on rotation at Children's throughout the year.

Residency Project

Each resident shall complete a research or major project as part of their residency training. The results of this project are presented by the resident at the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group’s annual meeting and Midwest Residents Conference in the spring. The resident will work with a project preceptor and will have access to hospital resources to assist with project design and data analysis.

Adverse Drug Report Review

Each resident will be responsible for maintaining the adverse drug report log.

Medication Use Evaluation

Each resident will be responsible for developing, performing and presenting a medication use evaluation project during their residency.

Resident Trips

Each resident class is encouraged to tour different hospitals and pharmacy departments during the year. The purpose of these activities is to see alternative pharmacy systems and gain additional depth in knowledge and understanding in the provision of pharmacy services.

Resident Salary and Benefits

Residents' salary and benefits for residency activities are received through Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. The stipend is competitive. Dental and health insurance is provided in the benefits package offered by Children's.

Residents will accrue 30 days of paid time off during the residency year. The resident will need to notify their primary preceptor and staffing coordinator in advance regarding vacation requests. Any remaining PTO hours will be paid out at the end of the year on a pro-rated basis with their residency stipend.

Staffing Responsibilities

Pharmacy practice residents will be scheduled to work every other weekend throughout the residency. In St. Paul, residents work 5 out of 12 weekends due to an occasional 12-hour shift.

Each resident can expect to work either Christmas or New Year's holidays in addition to a normal complement of additional holidays consistent with staffing patterns for the department.

On-Call Program

During the second half of the residency year each resident will rotate with the clinical leaders as the pharmacist on-call. The pharmacist on-call will be available by pager or phone 24 hours a day to provide clinical information or answer questions. The residents primary preceptor will be available as a backup.
